That serioso theme you mentioned was in fact Bernard Herrmann's theme music from <i>The Day The Earth Stood Still</i>. Likewise, the background score was cribbed from the same source.<br />Apparently, Fox and Allen were trying to save some bucks by tracking the pilot with an existing score, holding off on getting a full-time composer until they had a sale. (This was a fairly frequent practice at the pilot stage back in the day; I've seen many pilots which borrowed their music from other films.)<br /><br />About the <i>Checkmate</i> main title:<br />TV Guide did a feature once on title sequences which showed how they were produced. One of the photos showed how the <i>Checkmate</i> was filmed: various colors of paint were poured into a pot and were swirled around, with the titles on glass photographed over them. The feature was in color, and you can imagine how the titles would have looked if televised that way.Mike Dorannoreply@blogger.com
